Decorating apprentices have enjoyed a unique outdoor adventure thanks to the Dulux Academy and Dulux charity partner The Outward Bound Trust (OBT).
Eight apprentices from Dulux Academy partner The Bell Group and Lincoln College travelled to the Lake District last month to take part in a week long Brush with Adventure course sponsored by Dulux Academy.
The apprentices were all pushed out of their comfort zone, taking on a host of activities they had never tried before from rock climbing to gorge walking, as part of the course run by the OBT. Designed to develop their skills in leadership, negotiation and teamwork, the course also involved a three-day expedition with wild camping in remote locations.
It was a far cry from the apprentices’ daily lives, but the feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with each individual gaining a sense of pride in their achievements and an increased confidence they could translate into their professional development.
Dulux has supported the OBT for more than ten years raising over £1.7M which has enabled over 1,000,000 young people to take a journey of self-discovery through powerful, challenging, outdoor experiences.
Vickie Mather, Dulux Academy Lead, said: “Dulux Academy was launched to professionalise the decorating industry. Being a great decorator is more than having great application skills. I’m really proud that for the third year, we have been able to provide opportunities like this that challenge and develop team working, confidence and resilience, all the life skills required for the future of our trade.”

“It’s clear that the course has helped them realise that they can achieve much more than they may have previously believed and we’re looking forward to seeing them put their new skills into action in their training.”
Earlier this year, the Dulux Academy was awarded the Bronze for the ‘Best alignment of brand values during a CSR programme’ at the Corporate Engagement Award 2019 in recognition of its work supporting young people through the Brush with Academy course.
